Locals

With a population of only 13,000, there are over 150 times more tourists than residents. Over-tourism has taken over Česky Krumlov. People come in on buses in the morning and flood the streets, staring at the untouched architecture and scenic views. Who can blame them? Everywhere you walk, it looks like a photo on a post card.

The city escaped bombing in World War II as the Nazi’s wanted to preserve the beauty of the town for Germans to live there. It escaped redesign during the Communist era and has been well-preserved since as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Any repairs done to the historic buildings must be done with traditional materials in order to preserve the authenticity. Because of the unique nature of the Cesky Krumlov, tourists flock to the town for the weekend or even the day. But it has pushed the locals out and shaped the area for the needs of tourists.

Although Austin is a much larger city, it faces many of the same problems where people who have lived there for generations are being pushed out. South by South West overtakes Austin every spring break and has for over 30 years. Along with the innovative technology, groundbreaking films and up and coming bands comes problems for the city. Property which is already expensive, is being sold and then only used during the festival for a few days out of the year. Not only is it speeding up the gentrification of east Austin, but it is shaping the entire cityscape. Tourism and festivals are not bad but when traveling, people must be aware of the locals they are affecting.
